One of the very last Porsche 956s built, this example was sold new to Joest Racing. They first entered the car in the 1984 24 Hours of Le Mans where Henri Pescarolo and Klaus Ludwig upheld Porsche's honours by winning the race outright in the absence of the factory team. Jochen Mass, Henri Pescarolo and 'John Winter' subsequently scored Interserie and DRM victories in Blaupunkt colours. For the 1985 Le Mans, it was back in the NewMan colours it wore a year earlier but this time Ludwig was joined by Paolo Barilla and 'John Winter'. Despite being faced with Porsche's brand new 962Cs, 956-117 again proved victorious, making it one of just a handful of back-to-back winning Le Mans winning cars. The car continued to be successfully campaigned in the Interserie with considerable success and scored a World Championship victory at Fuji in October of 1986. After being driven to victory in the Kyalami 500 Kilometres by Piercarlo Ghinzani in November of 1986, it was retired from contemporary racing. Restored to its Le Mans winning colours, it was retained by Reinhold Joest and displayed in his private museum for many years. Joest finally sold the car in the mid 2010s, when it joined the stable of a prominent British historic racer.
